Greek Mythology

Greek mythology is an interesting topic to learn about because of all the myths and stories it tells. This particular mythology has a lot of heroes and gods. They all tie up in many particular ways and also have cruel punishments if they disobey. Greek mythology set the standard for how people should act accordingly to the myths. It also had different ways to portray natural disasters and life changing situations. People learn a lot based on these stories and how they were supposed to be.

Well every Monday we learn about Greek mythology. It’s one of my favorite subjects to learn about interesting and because of all the creatures and gods. So far we’ve learned about The Odyssey, which is the story of Odysseus trying to get back to his wife after he has been away for a very long time and facing challenges and overcoming a lot of things that were in his way to his wife and kid. We have also learned about the Greek gods like Athena, Poseidon, Hera, Zeus, Apollo, Hermes and many more.

My favorite gods in Greek mythology are Athena, Poseidon and Hades. I like Athena a lot because of what she represented to the Greek people. She was the goddess of wisdom, war, weaving and many more things. She was represented by an owl which meant wisdom. She was a beautiful goddess besides Aphrodite and all the other goddess. She was said to have taught men kind how to hunt and how to do all the useful skills while she taught women how to weave and spin looms. She is the only daughter of Zeus that was born out of his forehead. She was a very wise god and many came to her for her wisdom. I also like hearing about how strong she was in battle and how she faced the people that didn’t like her. Medusa is one of the people that dared to challenge her and ending up being the way she is known now. She is my favorite monster in Greek mythology.

Poseidon is amongst my favorite gods because he is ruler of the water and for me that’s pretty amazing. He was also known for creating interesting creatures for his lovers even though he had a wife. He was also the god of horses because he wanted his sister Demeter and therefore he created the horse and had a son with her. People sacrificed horses for him so that when they went fishing everything turned alright and they had fish to eat. He is one of my favorite gods because he knows how to get along with the other gods after a fight or battle like in his battle with Athena for Athens.

Hades is one of my favorite gods but at the same time he can be one of my least favorite gods. I think he is cool and has complete control of the underworld. He was a very selfish god and did things the way he thought they should be done. He could create many horrorific creatures and manipulate the dead. What I dislike about him is that he stole Persephone from Demeter and made her his wife. He forced Demeter into having seasons in which crops grow and when they don’t. This was established when they found out that Demeter had eaten six pomegranate seeds while she was in the underworld and since then she is with her mom for six months and is with Hades her husband for six months as well.

The thing that I don’t like in Greek mythology is how the portray women. All the myths we read about portray women as house wife and always loyal while the husband could go cheat on her with as many women as he wants. Even though there are goddess they have to submit to the gods power because the gods have more authority then they do. The battle between Athena and Poseidon over Athens demonstrates that in many different ways. Athena won the battle because the people chose her and because she gave the people the olive tree. In return Poseidon got upset and tried to flood the city which proofs to us that no god was ever happy when a goddess got away with what she wanted. Athena only won the battle because the people had to choose who they wanted to name the city after otherwise Poseidon might have won. There are many stories in which women are portrayed as only an object that men have. The Odyssey is a another great example because Odysseus cheats on his wife with plenty of women and goddess while his wife is at home waiting for his return and had to stay faithful while suitors’ want to marry her.

We’ve also learned about many other myths, like the Prometheus myth in which he creates humans and then disobeys Zeus and get his Kidney eaten every day by a Griffith-vulture and it re-grows the kidney every night so that he can suffer for disobeying Zeus. We also learned that his brother married Pandora just so that Zeus would let him go but it didn’t work because he didn’t marry her when Zeus had asked. We also learned that Pandora was given many gifts by the gods and curiosity was one of them and that encouraged her to open the box that released all the bad things in the world. We also learned about Aphrodite’s marriage with Hephaestus. It was a marriage Zeus forced Aphrodite in since he felt bad for his son since he was the ugliest and crippled amongst all the other gods, he decided he would balance his ugliness with her beauty.

Mythology has different ways to portray everything. It can help us understand why people have certain beliefs or it can help us try to understand our past. They explain many different things and what was believed to have happened. Mythology is a very interesting subject because we can still relate to it. It can even help us with the economy and many other things. It’s also interesting because the people that told the stories made them seem real that everyone else believed they were. It might have been a good thing for everyone to believe the gods and myths were real just so that they could have hope that things were going to change and they might get what they want or so that things might have a different outcome for them. I believe they had different gods for everything so that they wouldn’t feel they were just pressuring one god into doing everything. It also seems as if they choose all those gods for a specific reason. Greek mythology is very particular because they have a reason for everything and explain almost anything. They don’t only have gods they also have monster, nymphs and many more other creatures.
