The Crucible is a play that shows us how easily people get influenced or fooled into believing what others want us to believe. For example in the play Abigail Williams is a young woman that wants something she can’t have. What I mean is she wants a married man. Since she knows John Proctor doesn’t want her she plots evil things for the village.
The village was as innocent as possible since they know that churches court will hang them for any “sins” they had committed. It’s interesting enough that it had to come to witchcraft so the town’s people had to realize that they were all “sinners”. They knew they were all sinners but yet didn’t do much about it. It was as if they were still all in denial and the church still tried to have authority but yet ignored all the “sins” amongst the people unless they were made public.
For me it was interesting to read it because it taught me about the past and about McCarthyism. I learned that McCarthyism is kind of like the Crucible because people got blamed for been communist and got arrested for it. The same thing happened in the Crucible but only they where been accused of been witches. They all lie to get what they want.
The Crucible is mostly about a couple of girls that are really upset that they lie about witchcraft. Their leader Abigail Williams she tells them what to feel or what to do. The reason Abigail lies is to get the man she wants. She is a dirty, sneaky liar. She makes people think that there are witches in Salem. Since Salem is a puritan town they take the bible very seriously. It was a very ongoing situation. The girls that started everything decided to leave and stop accusing people after Abigail ran away with her uncle’s money.
The lies they told were unbelievable. The judges were harsh on the accused. They gave the accused two options to confess and be isolated or to die hanged. Since they knew lying was a sin and God wouldn’t forgive them for it they opted out with getting hanged. They tried to make all of them confess that but none of them would because they were all innocent. Like with McCarthyism they were accused of been something they weren’t that’s why this play went perfect around that time. It’s incredible that people are very gullible especially when it comes to making false accusations or coming up with evidence.
In the crucible they had one justification onto why they didn’t actually confess and that was because of their religious beliefs. Most of the accused said that Abigail was lying but the court didn’t believe them. So they had no other choice but to take what came to them. This play was basically to describe what happened in McCarthyism. When people truly believe in what they feel strong about what they believe in might come back and make them regret believing in it or feeling that they shouldn’t have believed in it that strong. It’s a very complex play and it describes what happened in real life with McCarthyism.
